When I started my internship at Preferred Technologies, I was excited to step outside the classroom and experience what it’s like to work in a professional environment. Over the past few months, I have learned valuable lessons, faced new challenges, and built relationships with colleagues who were always willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Looking back, this internship has provided me with experiences that will shape my future career and strengthen my confidence as I continue my professional journey.
Throughout the summer, I had the opportunity to contribute to projects supporting a diverse range of organizations, including a major international airport serving the Houston metropolitan area, one of Texas’s largest electric utility providers, a high-volume commuter rail and transit network in the Dallas–Fort Worth region, public school districts with some serving up to more than 70,000 students, nationally recognized research universities, and critical freight and passenger rail infrastructure facilities. Each project presented its own unique challenges and provided valuable insight into how experienced professionals approach complex problems.
One of the most rewarding aspects of these experiences has been observing collaborative teams work through critical issues, develop strategic solutions, and foster strong relationships with customers and stakeholders. These projects have not only expanded my understanding of different industries and operational environments but have also reinforced the importance of effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability in achieving successful outcomes.
Over the last several years, I have worked in a variety of roles that centered around sales, including landscaping services, car wash membership sales, and door-to-door water system sales. Through those experiences, I developed a passion for sales because it allowed me to meet new people, build connections, experience different environments, and see the direct impact of my efforts on my success.
Before this internship, I believed sales was primarily a transaction—a simple exchange of a product or service for money. I assumed that the most successful sales professionals were those who were the most persuasive or the best at convincing customers to buy their product.
This summer completely changed that perspective.
By participating in site walks and customer meetings alongside the sales professionals at Pref-Tech, I gained a firsthand understanding of what effective sales truly looks like. What stood out to me was that the conversations were not focused on convincing customers or pushing products. Instead, they were centered on understanding challenges, building trust, and developing long-term relationships.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned is that successful sales are built on trust. Strong relationships create opportunities for collaboration, transparency, and mutual success. When customers trust their partners, decisions become less about persuasion and more about working together to achieve a common goal.
This experience taught me that sales is not simply about selling a product or service—it’s about solving customer pain. The most effective sales professionals take the time to understand a customer’s needs, identify their pain points, and provide solutions that create real value. By helping customers achieve their goals, both organizations are able to grow and succeed together.
This shift in perspective has been one of the most impactful lessons of my internship and has further strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in sales.
From the Sales department to the IT department, it may seem at first glance that these teams have very little in common. One of the unexpected highlights of my internship was having an open desk in the Conroe office, located right next to the IT team. Looking back, I consider myself fortunate for that opportunity.
One piece of advice I would give to any intern—whether at Pref-Tech or another company—is to take the time to build relationships across as many departments as possible. Immerse yourself in the company’s culture and learn from the people around you. Some of the most valuable connections and conversations may come from individuals you never expected to work closely with.
Throughout the summer, the IT team welcomed me every time I walked into the office. They invited me to join them for lunch, shared their knowledge and experiences, and provided plenty of opportunities for conversation and laughter. What started as casual interactions quickly turned into meaningful professional relationships.
Experiences like these have shown me that a great company is about more than just the work being accomplished—it’s about the people who make that work possible. The relationships I built across departments helped me feel like part of the team and made Pref-Tech feel less like a workplace and more like a community. These are people I can learn from, trust, and enjoy spending time with.
Whether your connections are in Finance, Operations, IT, the Warehouse, or any other department, I encourage future interns to step outside their immediate team and get to know the people around them. Internships are temporary, but the relationships you build can have a lasting impact on both your personal and professional growth. Make the most of your time, be curious, and take advantage of every opportunity to connect with others—you are only an intern for a short time, so make every day count.
As I reflect on my internship at Pref-Tech, I am grateful for the experiences, lessons, and relationships that made this summer so impactful. From participating in customer meetings and site walks to learning from professionals across multiple departments, I gained a deeper understanding of both the technical and business sides of the industry. More importantly, I learned that success is built through trust, collaboration, and a willingness to continuously learn from others.
This internship challenged me to think differently, step outside my comfort zone, and grow both professionally and personally. The knowledge, skills, and connections I developed throughout the summer will continue to influence my future career and serve as a strong foundation for future opportunities. I am thankful to everyone at Pref-Tech who invested their time, knowledge, and support in helping me grow, and I look forward to applying these lessons as I continue my professional journey.
